The government seized $1 million worth of bogus designers bags at Miami Seaport, making it one of the largest busts of the year, according to WWD. Officials found more than 2,300 Louis Vuitton and Gucci bags making their way from China hidden in a shipment of clothes and other apparel.
“This seizure is a perfect example of our CBP officers and import specialists’ commitment to preventing counterfeit goods from entering the commerce of the United States,” said Acting Miami Seaport director Kenneth Haefner.
Last year, the government discovered $342 million worth of counterfeit bags and wallets making its way into the United States, and China and Hong Kong were the top two sources of the fake goods. In total, more than $1.2 billion worth of faux designer goods were confiscated.
However, this is no where near the biggest bust of counterfeit designer brands. In 2012, $325 million worth of fake apparel including Jordan sneakers and Coach handbags were discovered in New Jersey, making it one of the largest in history.
Still, fake or not, it does hurt to see such pretty handbags get destroyed.
