If you have combination skin, chances are you keep a beauty oil handy for those dry winters and an oil-free moisturizer for hot, summer days. Bad news: you’ve had it wrong this entire time.

But, the big reason I’ve been using sunscreen myself since my ’20s is to protect my skin from aging. When I worked in Sephora’s headquarters, I was astonished at the amount of money people spent on anti aging products. Why not prevent the problem in the first place? Think about what you want to look like in your ’40s and ’50s. Then find a great SPF moisturizer and use it every day.  Linda Wells, the founder of Allure Magazine, says she won’t leave the house without CeraVe AM, which is the drugstore moisturizer I use, too.

People with oily skin should use moisturizer. I know it’s counter-intuitive, but hydration can help to balance your natural oil production. If your skin is dehydrated, your body will pump more oil to your skin. No matter what your skin type, quit looking for oil-free moisturizers. Oils that clog pores aren’t used in quality products anymore. Oils, especially natural ones, help to deliver skincare ingredients and balance your skin’s production of oil.
