Candice Swanepoel Found the Fragrance That Gets People to Stop Her to Ask What She’s Wearing

Published

It’s supermodel mania at Juicy Couture — a couple months after tapping Behati Prinsloo, the brand has enlisted fellow Victoria’s Secret Angel (and denim designer!) Candice Swanepoel to join the Juicy Couture fragrance family as the brand’s gorgeous new face. PeopleStyle chatted exclusively with the model to get the scoop on her sweet-smelling new role, her future designer aspirations and how she’s gearing up for the 20th anniversary Victoria’s Secret show, below.

The 26-year-old South African native is fronting the ads for Viva La Juicy, which is no small deal; after all, as one of the brand’s top-selling fragrances, an item from the collection is added to a girl’s vanity roughly every minute. And Swanepoel had as much fun shooting the ads as you’d imagine.

“The Juicy girl is that fun-loving party girl [who] likes to get in a little bit of trouble, so it was a party scene,” she told PeopleStyle. “I had a beautiful pink party dress on, and then as she sprays the fragrance, so many different things happen to her — there’s a dance scene, it’s raining glitter — so we had a really, really good time shooting it.”

And as a Juicy girl, Swanepoel has picked up a few tips and tricks on getting the most out of her fragrance, like nailing down the perfect perfume placement to garner her tons of compliments from strangers.

“I do one spray on my wrist and then two on my neck and maybe my hair, because as you move your hair around people can smell the fragrance,” she explained. “It’s funny actually, because when I’m traveling around, I get a lot of compliments on this fragrance. Women stop me and they say, ‘Hey, what fragrance are you wearing?’ It’s very popular.”

She also shared that she considers fragrance part of her wardrobe. “If I leave the house and I haven’t sprayed perfume, I feel that something is missing — my day is not quite complete,” Swanepoel said. “If I have a travel fragrance, I’ll have it in my bag. Also, a rosewater spray is a good thing to have in my handbag. It’s just refreshing and hydrating.”

She’s traveling quite a bit these days, but the supermodel says she hopes to spend the free time she has in between flights working on her other passion: designing.

“You know, being a model and trying every style, every bikini, I’ve developed my own style. I know exactly what I like and exactly what I don’t like, and it’s nice to be able to share that with people,” she told PeopleStyle. “Definitely in the future I would love to [do more designing], but that’s why, with the denim line, I really wanted to learn firsthand what goes into hard work — the different styles, the fabrics and to be really hands on, so I really enjoyed that experience.”

So what does the supermodel hope to create next? “I have no idea,” she confessed. “I love clothing, I love all different styles, but it’s good to focus on something specific in the beginning, I think. Obviously I know a lot about swimwear and I’m a little bit of a bikini freak, but that would only be far into the future. So maybe clothing, jewelry. I’m not sure yet!”

In the near future, Swanepoel’s free time is spent gearing up for the Victoria’s Secret 20th anniversary runway show later this fall. Prepping for the big day begins weeks before the show, says the supermodel, and includes serious sweat sessions and lots of lean meals.

“I will probably work out four times a week, and I’ll be eating a lot of protein, just focusing on everything that goes in my body and maximizing my workouts,” she said. “But also taking the time to rest in between is important. I’ll workout and then have a rest day to make my body adjust to what I’ve done to it the day before. That’s it.”

Swanepoel adds that although it’s rare, sometimes she gets to hit the gym with all of her Victoria’s Secret supermodel BFFs.

“We’re all traveling in different directions all the time,” she told People. “Jasmine [Tookes] has taken me to a couple of her exercise classes, and then Behati [Prinsloo], Lily [Aldridge] and I sometimes [get together] when we’re getting ready for the show to do some workouts together. It’s very rare, but fun.”

Also fun? The level of pampering involved: “I’ll have a facial, have some massages and try and relax as well.” Not a bad way to work.
