Jane Fonda, 77, on Being Named a Fashion Icon: ‘I Think It’s a Hoot’

Published

Every time Jane Fonda steps out on the red carpet, the Internet has a collective freak-out — the 77-year-old knows how to bring the sexy. Which is why it should come as no surprise that W magazine nabbed the actress and fitness guru for its June/July 2015 cover.

In her cover story, which was shot by fashion photographer Steven Meisel, Fonda opens up about what it means to be a fashion icon, while serving up all sorts of #goals in Giambattista Valli Haute Couture, Elie Saab, Nina Ricci and Lanvin, among other designers.

“Truthfully, my relationship to fashion has always been strained,” she told W of her rocky beginnings with the industry. “When I was starting out as an actress in New York, I worked as a model because I needed to pay for acting classes. But I didn’t have what it took to be a model. I hated all the emphasis on how I looked, and I never paid much attention to clothes.”

It wasn’t until the 2000 Academy Awards, which Fonda attended in a custom Vera Wang creation, that she began to embrace her status among fashion’s leading ladies. “When I stepped out to present the award in my strapless satin dress and new haircut, there was an audible gasp. I thought: ‘Oh. Oh, this is new.’ I was so melancholy over Ted [Turner, Fonda’s ex-husband], and I realized in that moment that clothes mattered. They could change your mood in an instant. And I thought, I could do this.”

Now she hopes to set a precedent for women of a certain age to embrace fashion — no matter the year they were born.

“I think it’s a hoot that, at my age, people are calling me a fashion icon,” the star said. “I realized I didn’t have a lot of time left, and I wanted to pay more attention,” Fonda explained of her decision to step it up in the style department. “I had a vision: I wanted to give a cultural face to older women.”

Um, note to Fonda: Your plan is working. Just look at her crushing it, above, at the Cannes Film Festival in a cut-out Atelier Versace gown. And then again in a black plunging sequined dress!

“I suppose I’ve always known what I like on my body,” she told the magazine. “I took one look at that Balmain jumpsuit [from the 2015 Grammy Awards], and I said, ‘That’s it!’ I’m best when I’m wearing something structured, with no frills or bows. Something that will show my waist and bum, because I’ve always had a good bum.”

Her words, not ours. Read more in W‘s June/July issue, which hits newsstands June 2.

Save the date because April 26 comes the latest project The Coldest. Skilla Baby is poised for the announcement by unveiling a brand new single Free Big Meech. Produced by MIA JayC and Lee Choppn, this single hinges on tense synths and punchy 808s, while Skilla Baby unleashes a vital verbal flurry. Paving a lane to the forefront of the game at high-speed, rising Detroit rapper spoke on the project:

I took my time to put this project together… Sometimes, I feel like people try to place me in a box. The pressure of being a new artist, being successful, staying disciplined, and still clocking into the studio is very strenuous. But fun at the same time. As an artist, I’m known as the “Girl’s guy”. But I’ll never forget I come from the streets. As a real person, I feel so many emotions (mad, sad, happy, anxious, etc.). I say that to say, sorry for the wait but I wanted to put everything I feel into one project. Grab your coats…

Next up, the Vultures Eat The Most Tour takes him across the country on his most extensive jaunt yet. He also joins forces with New Orleans heavy-hitter Rob49 to co-headline the tour with tickets available here. This year is gearing up to be the coldest yet so pre-order your copy of the project here. It’s harder to wake up when you have mundane ish to do. Unveiling a brand new music video, Young France recruits UK Indie sensation Master Peace for huge new track Wake Up. Life becomes easier when you’re on the path to becoming a rockstar. The music video, shot in the UK, follows Young Franco and Master Peace individually, through a first-person lens as they undertake “mundane” daily activities until they then meet and begin to enjoy the iconic streets and taxis of London together. Franco spoke on the track:

Working with Master Peace has been an amazing experience. I found out about his project via his record “Eyes on You” and have wanted to work with him since that moment. I was writing a bunch of tracks in 2020. One of them being an early version of Wake Up, which I wrote with Elliot from Delta Riggs. I connected with Master Peace online and once I got to London last year, we smashed this in a couple of hours. His new record is fantastic and I’m super excited how this one turned out. Special mention to Danio from Husky Loops for some added production too.

Young Franco has started 2024 off with a bang, where he teamed up with UK rapper S1mba for the release of the funk laid hip hop track HITA. Wake Up follows a busy year of touring already, where he has done a sold out run of Europe with a string of sold-out shows in the USA. Young Franco has accumulated over 200 million streams and plans to continue to put Astralwerks Records on the map. Stream your copy of the single here and watch the dreamlike visual below.
