Recent graduates are in a vicious cycle where employers want you to start a job equipped with experience, and you are applying for the job in order to gain the experience.

This makes entry level jobs almost as extinct as VHS players and landline phones. The fashion industry is not immune to this career paradox, and those seeking to break into the industry are facing more struggles than ever before. As if fashion isn’t a tough field to get into as is, the new job market makes it that much more challenging, but there are ways to increase your chances of getting hired at a fashion company.

The key is to plan ahead before you even graduate from school. Whether you want to become the next Anna Wintour, or take on fashion’s digital age like Instagram’s Eva Chen, here are some tips on how to make the most of college to getting a job in fashion afterwards.

Internships

Interns are pretty much the new entry level workers, especially since many internships are now paid opportunities. This is the best chance you have of getting hired by a fashion company, because they are getting a sample of your work. If you are still a student, minimize this post and make an appointment with your academic adviser immediately to find out what your options are to incorporate an internship into your coursework. Take advantage of as many opportunities as possible. Not only are you giving companies a chance to get to know you as an employee, you’re also afforded the opportunity to get to know that company and the industry as a whole. Try some different roles and companies on for size so that you know what you really want to do in fashion.
