Choosing The Best Wedding Day Makeup Artist #TyingTheKnot

When it comes right down to it, I’m not a beauty girl. Of course I like my skin to be clear and even-toned. I love a nice lipstick and have obsessive periods over length-inducing mascaras. But to say I’m into beauty, like really into it, would be a total lie. With that said, one of the last things on my mind was wedding day makeup. Worst comes worst, I would do it myself.

Hold your gasp, please.

Turns out the man upstairs doesn’t want me to look busted on my big day, which is why I literally ran into makeup artist extraordinaire Tamara Delbridge. The NYC-based talent has worked with her fair share of celebrities –Kerry Washington, Pharrell, Taraji P. Henson– but more importantly, she can communicate with the makeup-clueless (ie. Me).

Turns out, getting the right makeup artist for wedding is no nonchalant task. In addition to the right personality, the artist needs to have a good grasp on time and control– in a room filled with several women. To get more info on what to expect, or what brides should expect on the day of, read what Tamara had to say below.

On common misconceptions brides have about their wedding day makeup: “Many brides choose makeup looks that’s don’t work with their bone structure. They’ll look at their favorite celebrity with totally different eye-shape, size etc., without considering that their own features are totally different, which will result in a look not consistent with what she chose. I advise my brides to choose a model or actress who looks more like them during the consultation. She’ll be much happier with the end result. Another makeup misconception is makeup timing. It’s advisable to allow more time for makeup than you usual allot for yourself when you’re doing your own makeup. Consider time to set up and breakdown when scheduling your makeup artist. It’s also good to have a place in your home specifically designated for you makeup artist ready to go when she/he arrives. You wouldn’t believe how fast time flies and those little aspects eat away at your prep time.”

On five things every bride should seek in their makeup artist: “When choosing a makeup artist for an event of this magnitude choose one who is 1. Punctual: Your day isn’t the day for anyone to show up fashionably late –especially the makeup artist. 2. Professional: Someone who conducts themselves well in mixed company. I’m sure your wedding party members could care less about what the makeup artist was doing the night before. 3. Accommodating: Makeup artists are sometimes asked to do people that we haven’t planned on doing. It’s always nice to know that you didn’t get charged 100 extra dollars just to put lip gloss on the flower girl –besides we usually pad our rates for situations like that. 4. On trend: This doesn’t mean you’ll look trendy if you want a classic look. This just means that the makeup artist is aware of new makeup innovations and products that will undoubtedly factor in on makeup wearability and how it reads in photos and on camera. 5. Experienced: It isn’t wise to choose an artist who has never done a wedding. An artist who has wedding experience is cognizant of timing, tantrums, emotional breakdowns and can handle anything thrown at the bride that day with ease. He or she and should be able to get her done beautifully and on time.”

On having natural/clean makeup while looking good in pictures: “Skilled makeup artists will be able to create stunning barely there looks with ease. It’s all about skin prep, product selection, and product placement. Primer’s serums and strobe creams help to create beautiful light reflective skin that seems to glow from the inside out. Well done –not over done– contouring creates structure, and additions like lash extensions create drama.”
