Gloria Yu is one of those girls you want both as a role model and best friend. Her creative energy and genuine graciousness is infectious. Spending an afternoon or an evening with the New York-based designer leaves you with the urge to create, and find your voice through the art of design.

For Gloria Yu has found hers.

Fiercely loyal to truth and authenticity, Yu paved her way through school at the famed Parsons School of Design in NYC and formulated her successful label out of not much more than dreams, sweat, hard work, and passion. Her sculptural headpiece label, Yunotme, has made it’s way into big-time retailers such as Lane Crawford and Net-A-Porter. And it seems that this is only the beginning for Gloria Yu. She shared with a glimpse into her influences, motivations, dreams, and history in this exclusive designer conversation below.

On her background and becoming a designer: “I don’t have the story about how I started making dresses for barbies when I was 5 –I wanted to be a spy up till I was 15. But I have always loved adventure stories. Reading them, writing them and living them. Doing whatever that felt right in my heart even though I wasn’t sure why. Going to New York felt right. Entering Parsons felt right. Living creatively –designing beautiful things and telling romantic stories through them felt right. So here I am.

On when she decided to start a headpiece label: “I didn’t exactly graduate in 2014 deciding I wanted to start a headpiece label. Just before I graduated, Lane Crawford wanted to commission me to make 40 unique sculptural headpieces (each took 40 hours of work – I still had no idea how me and my team managed to finish them!) for their winter campaign. The lady from Lane Crawford who I was working with then, asked if I sell what I was wearing, which is a simple silk headband (‘Flock’ in black) – and they ended up placing an order for the first Yunotme collection. It all started from there…”

On her biggest artistic influences: “Women who are sure of themselves – women who are ambitious, sexy and fun.”

On her most exciting moments in 2015: “When Yunotme launched on Net-A-Porter.com. And when I hear friends in other countries say they saw someone on the street wearing my pieces!”

On her dream for the future of her company: “To evolve it into a lifestyle brand and store for women who love to dream and have a good laugh.”

On exciting things happening for in 2016: “More exciting pieces and collections of course. I am excited about every piece I make. I will also be participating in an large scale installation art show, The 14th Factory (the14thfactory.com) that is going to take place on Wall Street, opening in April 2016. Not only is it going to be an amazing piece of installation work, it also gives back to charities supporting NYC’s at-risk youth, and I am also working with some of the best and most talented people I know — so that is pretty exciting. Other than that… we shall see!”
