Fat shaming has become a trending topic after body positive movements have taken over social media.

From Instagram banning the word curvy, to today’s news that it was added to the Oxford English Dictionary, fat shaming is constantly derided and people are quick to defend those who are insulted due to their weight.

Skinny shaming on the other hand, is rarely discussed and just as offensive.

Leah Kelley shared her story, and opened up how being a size 8 model she had to choose between gaining weight and living an unhealthy lifestyle or not work.

“I knew losing weight was not an option for my body shape,” Kelley told People. “But if I gained weight, I was told I could travel the world – and I did.”

However, after years of eating penne alla vodka and Haagen-Daz every night, and getting up to a size 16, she decided enough was enough and got back to her natural weight limit.

Kelley’s experience is the untold story of the fashion industry. We always hear about fat shaming, and models claiming they are told constantly they are too big, but rarely does anyone speak out about being told to gain weight.

Both types of body shaming are wrong, and deserve equal attention. Many celebrities have shed light on the criticism, and tabloids are quick to call out Hollywood stars who are “scary skinny” or “painfully thin,”which many ignore because being skinny isn’t considered an insult. One example is Keira Knightley, who successfully sued a British tabloid after it claimed the starlet was anorexic.

“I’ve got a lot of experience with anorexia,” she said. “It was in my family hugely. My grandmother and my great grandmother suffered from it. And I’ve got a lot of friends at school who suffered from it. So I don’t think it’s anything to be taken lightly. ”

Even though a size 8 is not technically “skinny,” Kelley’s story is just a reminder that shaming has an equal affect on everyone no matter what size they wear.
