The big reveal of Scott Eastwood’s Davidoff Cool Water campaign left us with a lot of feelings — and some pretty important questions. Like, “What exactly was he pondering as he stared into the ocean?” And “Does he always go swimming in his jeans?” We caught up with the actor to find out and scored some (shirtless!) behind-the-scenes photos and video from his shoot in the process. Here’s what we learned.

He’s been a fan of Cool Water’s “just-stepped-out-of-the-shower” scent since middle school.
“One of my first experiences with Cool Water was in seventh grade,” he says. “The cool guy who lived across the street had all the good colognes and Cool Water was one of them. I remember it very specifically. I definitely probably stole a few bottles.”
His favorite fragrance on a woman is similar to his taste in cologne.
“I like really clean, nice scents,” the actor explains. “I don’t like anything too over-powering. Something subtle.” And if you’re into breakfast food, that’s probably a plus: The smell of “waffles in the morning” reminds him of his first girlfriend, he says.
The ocean is extremely important to him.
Aside from finding that — yes — he has gone swimming in his jeans “plenty of times,” we also discovered the professional hottie is deeply pensive. It turns out, he was thinking about the “interesting relationship” between man and ocean as he posed for those brooding campaign shots. “The ocean’s an interesting place,” he says. “It’s full of very peaceful feelings, but it’s also full of power and raw energy. It’s mother earth — you have to respect it.”

Working with the brand holds a very special meaning.
Aside from the tie to his teen years, the star was particularly drawn to Davidoff because of its partnership with the National Geographic Society. (The Society’s Pristine Seas initiative helps protect marine life.) “Davidoff understood how much of my life revolves around [the ocean] — fishing, diving, surfing,” Eastwood says. “I was really good buddies with Paul Walker as well. He was like my older brother. He was really passionate about this project because it actually gives real dollars where it counts — into the science and research to conserve these places that really need it with over-fishing and over-pollution.” He’s going on a mission to the Galápagos Islands to help endangered animals later this year.

Even he can be hard on himself.
“I don’t think I’m in great shape in the shots to be completely honest,” he shares. “I’ve been in better shape.”
