The Final Consensus On Children Dressed As Adults For Halloween

There was a lot of talk this weekend about children’s costumes. Celebrity children, to be specific.

First there was North West who was Queen Elsa and a lady bug for Halloween. Somehow social media took it left when Billboard magazine posted a photo of her licking a lollipop and caption it with “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree…,” referring to her mother’s famous sex tape. The innuendo essentially sexualized the 2-year-old and had people up in arms– rightfully so.

Then we had Blue Ivy who was dressed as Imani Izzi, Prince Akeem’s arranged wife from “Coming to America.” While the outfit was cute, it was clearly a decision made by Blue’s parents, as the film –not fit for children her age– is something we doubt she has a penchant for. She was essentially dressed as a subservient grown woman who has no distinct personality.

And then we have Viola Davis, who’s 4-year-old daughter, Genesis was the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama aka her own mother. As someone she clearly looks up to, it was heartwarming to once again acknowledge the doors Davis has opened up for women of color.

So what does this all mean concerning children and Halloween?

While I’m not a parent, I do think there is a certain sense of responsibility that comes with being a role model to your own kids. As sponges, children absorb everything they see and hear, and at some point embrace or reject qualities they’ve been exposed to. And while Halloween may seem like an innocent day of fantasy, it also has the potential to be damaging.

Am I saying Blue Ivy will be permanently damaged from being dressed up as an Eddie Murphy character from the ’80s and having fun with her parents? No.

But I am saying, children should choose their own age-appropriate costumes or positive role models they look up to for Halloween. I am saying it’s never OK to slut-shame a baby, based the actions of her parents. In a nutshell, I’m saying children should have the right and privilege of being just that: children.

Call me conservative, but I appreciate nothing more than seeing kids enjoying Halloween as their favorite comic book characters, Disney princesses, animals or even just fruits/vegetables. Their innocence is the only thing they come into the world with, so why not let them be?
