Throwback Thursday: Oscar de la Renta’s Best Cannes Moments Ever

Published

on

Oscar de la Renta may have passed away last fall, but his beautiful designs continue to live on, as stars continue to sport the label at the Cannes Film Festival. To further pay homage to the late designer, the festival screened a 20-minute documentary, titled Ovation for Oscar, showcasing the designer’s life work, which was directed by Ryan Curtis.

De la Renta’s gowns have long been favored by Hollywood’s many leading ladies at the French film festival, so to celebrate the designer and the tribute documentary, let’s take a look back at the best of the designer’s gowns that graced those famous film-festival stairs.

First up is Freida Pinto, who made tons of “best of” lists in a red-orange gown with gold-lamé sequin embroidery, which featured a sweetheart neckline and dramatic train, for the premiere of her 2014 film, The Homesman. And in 2013, Isla Fisher was the epitome of elegance in a similar style — a red strapless gown, featuring a sweetheart neckline and multi-layered skirt — for The Great Gatsby premiere.

Cannes’ biggest risk-taker Fan Bingbing chose a lime green gown with a square neckline and sculpted skirt for the 2011 premiere of The Tree of Life. And Scandal star Kerry Washington, who opted for a plunging black gown with gold embroidery for the premiere of Synecdoche, New York in 2008.

This year, de la Renta’s label (now helmed by Peter Copping) was seen on stars including Soo-Joo Park, who wore an ivory eyelet peplum gown for the premiere of Youth, Emma Stone, who wowed in a black lace mini with organza ruffles for The Irrational Man photocall and Karlie Kloss, who chose a vibrant blue embellished strapless gown for the de Grisogono Divine Party. As long as Cannes favors jaw-dropping red carpet moments, we’d say de la Renta’s legacy is assured.
