The September issue is more than the culmination of months of hard work, sweat, tears and photo shoots embodied through pages; it’s also the best way for fashion magazines to gauge their success by advertising sales. Money makes the world go round and the final numbers are out for the top players of 2013– you may be surprised at the results.

Coming in at No.1 for the umpteenth time is Vogue with a 4.5 percent decline from last year– which was an impressive 661. The ‘fashion bible’ credits its “defined position, both in the industry and with consumers” for their consistent success. We say: It helps to have an omnipresent EIC with a penchant for getting the hottest talent on the cover.

4. Harper’s Bazaar, 444
5. Glamour, 215 ad pages
6. W, 303 ad pages

What’s interesting is that despite having shifts in staff and hiring social media savvy editor, Eva Chen, Lucky magazine declined 34.3 percent from 137 to 90 ad pages in the book. At the end of the day, one has to examine what the magic formula is for drawing more readers and advertisers to print. Until then, we’ll be skimming the internet.
