Why Dolce & Gabbana’s Celebration Of Motherhood Is Important

Dolce & Gabbana is a powerhouse luxury label that constantly celebrates the matriarch. The Italian “famiglia” truly reigns at the center of D&G’s world season after season. This theme reached its culmination in their fall 2015 runway entitled, “Viva La Mamma!”

Fashion, by and large, fixates on the new, the young, the fresh, and the exciting. Too often, the industry focuses on the young woman— the free, independent party girl. Frequently, this young cosmopolitan portrayal is touted as the center of excitement for the modern woman’s life. However, it’s refreshing to get a perspective of womanhood that strays from the pack. D&G certainly did that in their spring 2015 advertising campaign, which featured vivacious senior Italian matriarchs donning the season’s offerings. We have seen other luxury brands praise mature women like Celine’s Joan Didion ad.

This show season, maturity took a back seat to motherhood. Dolce & Gabbana paid tribute to the power of women’s roles as mothers. The design duo endeavored to highlight the versatility of women in their many roles and how fashion plays a part. The collection featured signature silhouettes and materials with the re-occurrence of a rose motif, as it is a customary token for Italians to give a rose to mothers on Mother’s Day. The Spice Girl’s endearing tune about motherhood, “Mama” added a sweetness to the whole affair. Stefano Gabbana explained the motivations behind the collection in the most sentimental and beautiful way in this statement to Vogue:

“The word mamma is not fashion—of course it’s not,” he said. “It means love, forever. Who do you call when something goes wrong? Your mother. Who do you call when you’re excited? Your mother. We took all our ideas from children—it’s about the family, and love. Fashion is important, yes—but we wanted to give something real, not just cold clothes, clothes, clothes. Everything is so fast now— but via fashion, you can talk about things that have a bigger meaning. Domenico and I have only been doing this for 30 years because we love it. I’m not a therapist, I do fashion. We live in dark times. But we want to remind everyone that with love, you can change everything.”

The whole thing was a family affair, as the model’s walked with their children and a pregnant Bianca Balti was glowing as she showed off her baby bump in a blush pink form-fitting wiggle dress.

“She’s always there, she’s the person you can always call,” Stefano Gabbana explained to Style.com. Motherhood is a theme that touches everyone, “Every man everywhere has a mother.” Take a look at more of our favorite highlights from Dolce & Gabanna’s “Viva La Mamma” below!

Mobby Rosas – “Up To Sum” f/ Westside Boogie (Video) + “The 4th Step” (Album)

The track “up to sum” is one of my favorite stories of how a collaboration came about. WESTSIDE BOOGIE had posted an open verse challenge for his song “Mood” on instagram and I picked it up. I’ve done a few open verse challenges before, to no favorable outcome other than just posting more content. I didn’t think much would come of this verse entry. I recorded my video audition for the song while at work, I was a server at a hotel restaurant in downtown LA, in uniform and all. I posted it and tagged WS Boogie and to my surprise, he DM’d me saying that he thought my verse was hard and if I ever wanted him on a project, he was down. I remember reading the message at work and being in shock. I had wanted to work with WS Boogie for years and had even tried to reach out in the past, to no response. I immediately hopped on the opportunity to.
