I love when I get to cover artists from my hometown. DC has always been a place of unique and one-of-a-kind musical tastes, from the rich history of Go-Go to the new youth-driven “DC DRILL” scene; DC has always had its own identity in the music scene that the entire industry has sampled from.
Today we cover an amazing female artist by the name of Big Gilly who has been having a stellar 2022 in the DC music scene with a full schedule of booked shows, endless interviews, and even placement on Billboards in Times Square!
Big Gilly has been in and around the music scene of DC for many years but just recently started focusing solely on her career and you can tell that she has been holding in so much talent for far too long. Her first video “Bag On Her/Body Rock”, which is a double feature by the way, gives you two very different vibes which complement each other extremely well. The turnt up sexualized energy of “Bag On Her” would make you think the song was written for or by a man but NOPE; this boss lady is here to show that women got that bag too and if you a Bad B*tch she will make rain just as much if not harder than any man could. It’s a nice twist to what we are programmed to see when it comes to music like this.
Just when you think it can’t get more lit, with all the booty shaking and money throwing, Gilly switches gears and brings the beast out with the second half of the double feature “Body Rock”! This video starts with a phone call between her and another female having caught someone who ran off with the pack and she does not hold back letting the entire city and Industry know that Big gilly is the Big Boss and she is going to get every bit of respect she deserves. Her cool demeanor over the beats meshes well with her hard-hitting, ear-perking bars for a complete and total dope musical experience.
The visuals accompanying both tracks look ready for a place on BET, MTV, etc., and I’m sure before the year is over we will be seeing It all over our tv screen. We here at OnTheSceneNy can’t wait till hear what’s next from this beautiful artist and will be eagerly awaiting her next release!
