It seems like every other week, there’s a dose of not-so-good news spreading about classic American retailer: J. Crew. And not to our surprise, this week proved nothing different. While the label recently made a huge hire earlier this year, J. Crew is still having a hard time getting out of its downward slump – and one retail analyst has decided to voice his opinion on it.

According to Robin Lewis, the specialty retailer “is indeed in a danger zone.” There’s no question that the brand has been through a number of positive triumphs, but along with the popular collaborations and classic American aesthetic, the company is also facing a problem selling merchandise. Lewis pointed out that too much success can easily turn into a negative thing – and with the label going through rapid expansion and product missteps, those decisions took a toll on the brand.

But if that isn’t enough, it’s been said that J. Crew also hurt itself by trying to appeal to luxury as well as casual consumers – just think: J. Crew, J. Crew Factory and even J. Crew Mercantile are equally trying to make waves. In all, it makes it impossible to know exactly what J. Crew is as a brand, notes Lewis.

As far as we’re concerned, we’re not sure if this is in fact an identity crisis on behalf on J. Crew. But if it is, we’re hoping that the retailer can come to some sort of conclusion, and stat – because quite honestly, their classic separates will always carry a soft spot in our fashion hearts.

Check out a few of our must-have picks from the brand on the pages ahead.
