Plus size fashion has been under the microscope in recent months, for its lack of fashionable options for women.

However, it seems plus size men’s fashion is largely being ignored completely.

In an interview with The Globe, Bruce Sturgell, the creator of Chubstr, details the difficulties in the retail world for men an XL.

“There’s a preconceived notion that bigger guys don’t care about how they look,” he said. “When I’m looking for big-and-tall clothing and I get a catalogue or look at a website, it’s Hawaiian shirts and Soprano’s-style track suits. It’s not what I want.”

Some bigger brands such as Ralph Lauren and Eddie Bauer have plus size options for men, but there is no real marketing push behind the lines.

Sturgell also revealed frustrations since plus size fashion for women has been getting the attention it deserves, while men see their options staying the same.

Recently, it was revealed that plus size women’s fashion industry is a $9 billion business, but men, due to lack of resources, only generates $1 billion.

You also see the fashion industry ignoring plus size men when it comes to the runways and catalogs, which is slowly embracing “larger” women but not men.

“Women’s plus size is booming,” Sturgell said.  “There are brands out there that are doing it well. They’re using plus-size models of different shapes and sizes and ethnicities. They’re getting it right and they have audiences that love them.”

However, with the rise of the “dad bod,” maybe the retail world is ready to embrace plus size mens fashion.
