Generally, most of us buy a product for one simple reason: because it works. However, in an industry as somewhat vapid as fashion/beauty, appearances are obviously a factor in success rates.

Witty and cleaver names are fun to stumble upon, but do they pack actual buying power?

Again, when combined with a formula that gets the job done, it does. Take Too Faced’s hugely popular “Better Than Sex” mascara. Besides the scandalous moniker, the polymer formula actually separates individual lashes and delivers volume.

Having a name that draws people in is half the battle; the product needs positive reviews to build a loyal customer base.

Alternatively, sometimes all a product name needs is controversy to go global. Last year, Kat Von D defended her cosmetics line after many criticized her for naming a lipstick shade, “Underage Red.” That tatted beauty maven–who once named another shade “Celebutard”–remained unapologetic.

“I clearly remember wearing a variation of this shade when I was 16 years old. I also remember the feeling of wanting so badly to go see a specific concert at this age, and not being able to get in to the venue because I was underage,” she wrote in a Facebook response.

“Underage Red is not a girly, pink shade,” she added. “It is not a sophisticated, deep red either. It is an unapologetic, bold red. To me, Underage Red is feminine rebellion.”

Today, the rock and roll brand is a top seller in Sephora stores, with its highly pigmented studded lipstick breaking the most ground.

In an era where our outside appearances are constantly judged on social media, we find it necessary to have funny makeup names to play with. Even when you’re heavily contoured, maintaining a light sense of humor is important.
