Everyone has their own version of pampering. For some, it’s a mani/pedi at the local salon. For others, it’s hours of guilt-free shopping. And for many, a spa day is the pinnacle of relaxation. I never understood the appeal of the latter until I experienced a body treatment at Elizabeth Arden’s Red Door Spa. Beyond the fancy robes and cucumber water are body treatments that are seriously euphoric.
However, once I was out of the space and into regular life again, there were a million questions running through my head. Part of the reason I believe spas are sometimes regarded as inclusive is because we don’t know those basic rules. Underwear on or off? Male or female masseuse? Mani or massage?
This week, Red Door Spa’s DC/MD Regional Manager, Melissa Wyman, is giving us all the answers! Keep reading to see her pro-tips as well as how YOU can win a FREE treatment as part of our “Friday Freebie” giveaway series!

StyleBlazer: How do I go about deciding between a male or female masseuse?
Melissa Wyman: I think deciding between a male or female masseuse is a personal choice – you should go with whichever you feel most comfortable. At Red Door Spa, we have specific draping guidelines to ensure the highest level of modesty during our massages, so the guests don’t feel exposed. I will say though there is a misconception that for a deep massage, you have to see a male therapist. This is completely not true. The pressure applied during a massage comes down to technique and expertise – not gender.
SB: What are the rules for tipping?
MW: Gratuities or tips are at the discretion of the guests. Most guests leave between 15% – 20%, based on the full price of the service received.
SB: What are you getting from a spa mani/pedi that you won’t get in a regular nail salon?
MW: A lot! First and foremost, manicures and pedicures in the spa setting are performed with a high degree of cleanliness, following the most stringent sterilization standards to ensure the safety of both the service provider and the guest. Spa manicures and pedicures also use the highest quality products, delivering maximum benefits to not just the nails, but your skin, hands and feet. And finally, spas ensure all of the service providers are professionally licensed and undergo extensive training prior to performing services on a guest.
SB: Underwear on or off? What are the rules; does it depend on the type of body treatment?
