Last night LVMH the announced 12 finalists (shown above) of their inaugural LVMH Prize competition. Up from the expected 10, the selection features four brands out of New York as well as three menswear brands, and includes five of our favorites from the semifinalist list.
“It was so hard for them to make a choice because they were all so talented,” Delphine Arnault said of the selection committee narrowing down the 30 semifinalists to trade journal WWD. Delphine served as chair of the committee and has been LVMH’s driving force in acquiring, developing, and nurturing emerging designers for the past few years.
Originally, the competition, which was open to designers under 40 all around the globe who had completed two collections, was supposed to see 10 finalists square off for the grand prize of 300,000 euros, coaching, and support from the LVMH team for a year. But because of a four-way tie between the contestants once the votes were in from the 42-member selection committee, that group has swelled to 12.
“The LVMH Prize finalists reflect the vitality and diversity of young fashion today,” said Delphine via release. “The singularity as well as the high level of quality of their collections particularly impressed the experts. I wish them the best of luck for the last step that awaits them which will be highly emotional.”
In May, the 12 finalists will be flown to Paris to face a jury of 11 members including eight creative directors from LVMH-owned fashion houses like Nicolas Ghesquière, Marc Jacobs, and Raf Simons as well as LVMH brass like Delphine. Only one will walk away with the top prize.
