While Comic-Con is typically reserved for celebs to debut their latest sci-fi and comic book-inspired TV shows and films, Hollywood’s hottest stars are starting to use convention as another excuse to show off their sartorial and beauty skills (and we’re loving it!). One star who really rocked the weekend-long event? KeKe Palmer and her bold purple lipstick! We’ve got the exclusive details on the star’s bold makeup moment from her go-to pro, Brandy Allen, below!
Instead of the traditional hot pink hue we’ve been seeing all over the red carpet this summer, Allen opted for a lip shade that better blended in with the rest of Palmer’s ensemble (a plum Edition by Georges Chakra two-piece pants set with a sexy cutout top) for a monochromatic statement.
“I always try to push the envelope with trends by doing what everyone isn’t doing,” Allen tells PEOPLE. “Right now, everyone was bronze and highlight with minimal color, so I integrated that with a non-traditional lip you really wouldn’t find in the summer — dark purple. Not only is it a fall lip, it’s monochromatic to her wardrobe.”
And to nail that vibrant plum hue, Allen relied on not one but two shades of lip stain: Nars Velvet Matte Pencil Train Bleu and Sephora’s Cream Lip Stain in African Violet. The makeup artist perfected the two-toned lip by filling in Palmer’s pout with the Nars lip pencil, and then applied the Sephora lip stain on top of the pencil to create an ombré-like shade.
So what did Palmer think of her pout? “She was very pleased,” Allen says. “We work together on her looks, but most of the time she gives me creative range. I love the fact that she trusts my craft every time. I understand what she likes and her love for color and experimenting, so our chemistry is amazing!”
