The backdrop of the Freedom Tower lit up beams of light on the 14th 9/11 anniversary, as over a thousand people flooded their way into Pier 26. Designers, editors, the lucky 800+ people who got their hands on those exclusive online invites, and A-list celebrities (Kim K’s baby bump included!) made an appearance at Riccardo Tisci’s first New York City Givenchy runway show. Not only was the move from Paris to the Big Apple something major, but the event also marked Tisci’s 10th anniversary with the fashion house – which caused for some sort of celebration.

The designer called in the help of modern artist Marina Abramovic for the show’s artistic direction – who crafted a set from recycled materials. Audience viewers sat in awe as living art installations (i.e. a woman getting drenched by flowing water and a man holding rootless trees) represented just a portion of the images to admire during the intense one-hour wait.

Opening looks (and many more after) presented a monotone color palette – one that felt feminine and effortless. It was if Tisci re-imaged the silhouettes of classic tuxedo-wear for the modern maven. Lace-trimmed slip dresses and camisoles were paired elegantly over easy-cut pants, while tuxedo jackets with tails made a head-turning appearance. Men were dressed in tailored pants, structured blazers and embroidered sheer tops that showed the perfect hints of skin.

But that all seemed to be the calm before the storm once Joan Smalls hit the catwalk in a voluminous jet-black gown – one that paid homage to the brand’s lavender frock that made headlines in its spring 2010 couture collection. Following the statement piece came models flaunting extraordinary face decorations of jewels and lace – which pretty much confirmed the fact that Riccardo Tisci could literally create anything, FYI.

And while the fact of the matter stands that no real runway show can eliminate the tragedy of 9/11, it was proven that Tisci’s goal wasn’t to override, but to present a collection that made us reflect.
