The California cult brand Stüssy is known around the world for its logo-emblazoned T-shirts, sweatshirts, and caps. The popular clothing company that was ideal to Hip-Hop DJs, skaters, punk rock lovers, and surfers is now celebrating its 35th anniversary!
The street wear brand, inspired by its designs from the 1980s and ’90s, has revamped its old-school skate aesthetic in an exclusive series at Dover Street Market, which also includes a collaboration with the designer Kiki Kostadinov. As a laid-back name synonymous with youth culture and the SoCal surf and skate scenes, Stüssy is now considered an old geezer within the fashion realm.
Despite retaining a sprightly step over the years in the face of an ever-changing marketplace, Stüssy’s ability to remain authentic is made evident by the Stüssy-dedicated space making its debut over the weekend at New York City’s Dover Street Market. “Stüssy is so iconic, and we all have very fond memories of the brand at DSM,”James Gilchrist, Dover Street Market’s general manager told Highsnobiety. “When this opportunity came up for us to be part of their 35th anniversary celebrations, we immediately agreed to do it. When I was a teenager in Scotland, this was the brand to have. It was virtually a uniform for my generation, and it transcended many different subcultures. There are not many brands that ever achieve that kind of following and cultural status.”
Stüssy celebrates its 35th anniversary by presenting a small capsule collection, consisting of a bucket hat, shirt, T-shirt, a long-sleeve T-shirt, as well as a short-sleeve coach jacket. The offering perfectly encapsulates what Stüssy stands for in terms of silhouettes, look and graphic treatment. If you’re interested in throwing back to those highlight days of the late ’80s and early ’90s, wearing tribal prints and bold graphics, you can buy the full Dover Street Market x Stüssy 35th Anniversary Capsule Collection from the DSM online store.
