One of the most important conversations you can have in the trajectory of your career, is the negotiation with your boss for a raise. Conversely this is also one of the most awkward conversations you can have in life period.
Money is a very touchy subject to discuss with even the closest of our friends let alone a work superior; which is why many of us are ill prepared to do so. According to BuzzFeed’s Managing Editor for mobile (and all around wise woman) Stacy-Marie Ishmael, most women, especially women of color, don’t get raises because we don’t ask, and when we do ask we have no idea how, what grounds or when.
The fact of the matter is that as you contribute more to a company, your compensation should reflect that work. While there are different variables at play that affect negotiations, Ishmael believes if certain personal assessments are made before the big talk you’re better off.
She spoke about these factors on the Another Round podcast, here are some of her tips and how they can be applied to your fashion oriented job. And listen to the full episode, here!
