Runway Recap: Sophie Theallet’s Jamaican Inspired SS15 Collection

SOPHIE THEALLET SS15 presented by MADE

French designer Sophie Theallet debuted her eponymous Jamaican inspired Spring / Summer 2015 collection and her first ever shoe collaboration with Jean Michel Cazabat last night at Milk Studios. “I don’t work on vacation,” said New York-based Theallet, a former Alaia designer, but while staying in the Montego Bay area, the collection began to take shape in her mind.

The island vibe was thick in the room, from the Reggae music, tribal prints and cutouts, Rasta colors, and strappy backed resort ready maxi dresses. She incorporated eyelet after seeing a Jamaican woman dressed in a simple eyelet dress heading to church, utilizing the classic warm weather fabric in modern ways: paneled pieces, in black layered over prints. Sequined tweed separates were also a standout contrast alongside clean cotton sheaths. Said Theallet, “there is nothing more chic than a simple cotton dress.”
