Ladies and gentlemen, the season of over-indulgence is upon us. This means a ton of over-eating, over-spending, and not nearly enough healthy activity.

By the time Dec 31 rolls around, we’re stuffing ourselves into Spanx for New Years Eve parties, and swearing off booze… starting Jan 2. The key to enjoying this time of food, fun, and family is boosting our ability to delay gratification and exercise will power.

According to American psychologist, Walter Mischel who conducted the famous marshmallow test, self control can be learned.

Here are some tips:

    1. Distancing. Instead of staring at that jar of Talenti, remove it from your sight. Better yet, don’t let it into your house to taunt you in the wee hours of the morning.
    2. Distraction. Find something constructive to do to occupy your mind when temptation rears its ugly head.
    3. Change your perception of the things you desire. Associate what you want with something undesirable. Start thinking of stuffing ans mac n cheese as actual cellulite forming on the back of your thighs, and you will begin to see it as something you don’t want instead of something you crave.
    4. Sleep. We are more likely to crave sugary snacks when our bodies are tired and glucose levels are low. If you’re like me, and you find yourself having to choose between napping and eating at the end of a long work day, choose sleep.
    5. Forgive yourself. Falling off of the wagon is bound to happen a few times on your journey to impulse control, but wallowing in the regret of having done so will actually make you do the bad behavior more.  You can fall into a vicious cylce if you don’t accept that you slipped up, forgive yourself, and move on.
