Irvington, New Jersey narcotics police officer Maurice Gattison, is currently under heavy fire for his side career as a rapper.   He goes by the name of “Gat The Great”, and has 2 viral music videos for his singles “Temper Like An Alcoholic” and “2 Minutes of Gat.”  In his songs he uses gay slurs such as “faggot” and spits lines like, “I’m a felon for life.  Don’t make me fruit cup your melon tonight.”

Gattison’s job has been on the line since March, when individuals, including City Council member David Lyons expressed that Gat should be removed from the force.

“If they lose their jobs, that’s life.  I think police officers need to take responsibility for their actions and they should have thought about the consequences before they took those actions.”

Gattison issued the following statement during a press conference in March to explain his role as a rapper and how it doesn’t affect his ability to perform his duties as an officer.

“This lyrics that I used in no way did I intend for them to be perceived as homophobic.  It was basically me adapting to the rap culture and slang use. If you listen to the lyrics there’s now way you can perceive that I’m referring to someone gay.”

There are three other officers involved in the matter who appeared in Gattison’s videos and are also at risk of losing their jobs.  One officer is Internal Affairs detective Michael Gardner.
