5 Reasons To Appreciate Alber Elbaz’s Work At Lanvin

It’s looking like rough times in the world of high fashion, with another major exit from a fashion house. This time it’s Alber Elbaz of Lanvin.

The talent who has spent the last 14 years giving a refreshed persona to the 150-year-old brand is said to be exiting due to tensions within the company. Elbaz, like Raf Simons of  Dior and Alexander Wang of Balenciaga, is one of the recent high profile designers to leave a house because of the increasing pressure of building a company, opposed to simply being a creative.

According to WWD:
It is understood members of his design team were informed of his exit this morning, and all employees at Lanvin were summoned to a meeting this afternoon in Paris. Lanvin officials could not immediately be reached for comment. Sources said Elbaz already emptied his office on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. The development comes less than a week after Raf Simons resigned from Christian Dior after a three-and-a-half year stint, intensifying discussion about the pressures and restraints today’s creative directors face in an accelerating industry.

The news is startling but of no huge surprise as Elbaz had noted in the past his disdain for the current culture of fashion.

“We designers started as couturiers with dreams, with intuitions and with feelings,” the 54-year-old said in his speech at the Fashion Group International’s Night of the Stars last week. “We started with, ‘What do women want? What do women need? What can I do for women to make their lives better and easier? How can I make a woman more beautiful?’ That is what we used to do. Then we became creative directors, so we have to create, but mostly direct. And now we have to become image-makers, making sure it looks good in the pictures.”

While there is some talk of reshuffling to other brands, we have a feeling the general sentiment is that change needs to happen. And it needs to happen fast.

While the heads of these companies work things out, we suggest you check out these five gorgeous shoes from Lanvin, courtesy of Elbaz’s leadership.

Mobby Rosas – “Up To Sum” f/ Westside Boogie (Video) + “The 4th Step” (Album)

The track “up to sum” is one of my favorite stories of how a collaboration came about. WESTSIDE BOOGIE had posted an open verse challenge for his song “Mood” on instagram and I picked it up. I’ve done a few open verse challenges before, to no favorable outcome other than just posting more content. I didn’t think much would come of this verse entry. I recorded my video audition for the song while at work, I was a server at a hotel restaurant in downtown LA, in uniform and all. I posted it and tagged WS Boogie and to my surprise, he DM’d me saying that he thought my verse was hard and if I ever wanted him on a project, he was down. I remember reading the message at work and being in shock. I had wanted to work with WS Boogie for years and had even tried to reach out in the past, to no response. I immediately hopped on the opportunity to.
