If you have combination skin, chances are you keep a beauty oil handy for those dry winters and an oil-free moisturizer for hot, summer days. Bad news: you’ve had it wrong this entire time.

As you age, so does the life span of your pimples, making a consistent skin care routine seem impossible. Fear not–there is a solution!

Consider investing in Arithmetic’s Acne Control Complex ($30). It’s specially formulated for twenty-somethings who suffer from nasty breakouts. Using a combination of benzoyl peroxide, tea tree oil and shea butter, it offers the same benefits of your oil-free go to, but with added hydration; no more dried out skin!

We were lucky enough to chat with Arithmetic’s very own Andy Bosselman, who debunks all the skin care myths while dishing very sound advice. Take notes, SBs!

On the biggest skin care issues for twenty-somethings :

We still think of pimples and acne as a teen condition but it’s now much more common in the 20s than it used to be. The pimples we get as adults tend to last longer, too. This is also when our skin starts to become a little dryer, thinner and more sensitive. So, products made for teens can start to irritate skin.

On most common millennial skin mistakes:

Every day you don’t protect your skin from the sun, the UV rays are creating permanent damage that will accumulate over time and make you look old (May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month). But, the big reason I’ve been using sunscreen myself since my ’20s is to protect my skin from aging. When I worked in Sephora’s headquarters, I was astonished at the amount of money people spent on anti aging products. Why not prevent the problem in the first place? Think about what you want to look like in your ’40s and ’50s. Then find a great SPF moisturizer and use it every day.  Linda Wells, the founder of Allure Magazine, says she won’t leave the house without CeraVe AM, which is the drugstore moisturizer I use, too.

Easy tips for every skin type? (Oily, Dry & Combination)
People with oily skin should use moisturizer. I know it’s counter-intuitive, but hydration can help to balance your natural oil production. If your skin is dehydrated, your body will pump more oil to your skin. No matter what your skin type, quit looking for oil-free moisturizers. Oils that clog pores aren’t used in quality products anymore. Oils, especially natural ones, help to deliver skincare ingredients and balance your skin’s production of oil.
What is it about hot weather specifically that bothers skin?
Humidity and warmth make skin an even better breeding ground for the bacteria that can cause breakouts.  Benzoyl peroxide is a the most powerful blemish busting ingredient, but now that we’re not kids anymore, it can irritate our skin. That’s why we combined it with natural ingredients that soothe and hydrate skin in our Acne Control Complex spot treatment.
