Benard Hopkins Calls Victory in Saturday Fight a “Warm Up”

Published

on

Bernard Hopkins may be 49 years old, but that doesn’t mean he’s any less skilled than he was in his more youthful days. The light-heavyweight champion retained his IBF title and managed to strip his opponent Beibut Shumenov of his WBA title in the process.

While many people believe that Hopkins delivered a dominant performance that was far superior to his opponent who was 19 years younger than him, one judge, Gustavo Padilla, believed that Shumenov was was the victor. Despite Hopkins flooring his opponent with a hard right hand in the 11th round, Padilla scored the fight 114-113 in favor of Shumenov. Meanwhile, judges Jerry Roth and Dave Moretti scored the bout 116-111 for Hopkins. Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer was disgusted with Padilla’s scorecard and thinks he should be fired for his lack of awareness.

“That is complete bullsh*t,” Shaefer said following the showdown. “That’s another judge that should be retired.”

Hopkins’ ring generalship and overall boxing knowledge allowed him to connect with 49% of his 383 punches thrown; meanwhile he managed to make Shumenov land a mere 20%. He spoke on his ability to make Shumenov miss so much and his overall performance, and where he ranks among the best in the world during his post-fight interview, where he stated:

“I didn’t do that when I was 30. He was really surprised the way I could stand there and let him miss. Boxing is a science. If you don’t have to get hit, don’t. You don’t want someone else counting your money.

“The pound-for-pound best fighter in the world right now is Floyd Mayweather. I’ll tell you, behind Andre Ward, who I believe is second and should be, I’m not that far from the top three. My age and the way I’m doing it. I’m just telling you, I’m not done yet.”

Following his fight, B-Hop posted up a series of pictures and videos on his Instagram account where he boasted about his win only serving as a “warm-up” for his Monday, April 21st, training.

“Yo I hope everybody enjoyed the fight,” B-Hop stated in one Instagram video. “That was a warm-up. That was warm-up for my Monday training. So that was warm-up-Satuday. Now I’m getting ready for the second warm-up.”

Mobby Rosas – “Up To Sum” f/ Westside Boogie (Video) + “The 4th Step” (Album)

The track “up to sum” is one of my favorite stories of how a collaboration came about. WESTSIDE BOOGIE had posted an open verse challenge for his song “Mood” on instagram and I picked it up. I’ve done a few open verse challenges before, to no favorable outcome other than just posting more content. I didn’t think much would come of this verse entry. I recorded my video audition for the song while at work, I was a server at a hotel restaurant in downtown LA, in uniform and all. I posted it and tagged WS Boogie and to my surprise, he DM’d me saying that he thought my verse was hard and if I ever wanted him on a project, he was down. I remember reading the message at work and being in shock. I had wanted to work with WS Boogie for years and had even tried to reach out in the past, to no response. I immediately hopped on the opportunity to.
