Gigi Hadid Got All Her Prom Dresses from Her Mom Yolanda’s Closet!
Gigi Hadid is kind of a big deal these days. To recap, the 20-year-old model has walked on just about every major catwalk, is the current face of Maybelline New York and lands a new ad campaign every other week (not to mention she’s part of Taylor Swift’s squad). Which is why we were so excited to sit down with the star to chat all things fashion — like stealing clothes from her mom’s closet, the secret behind her ultra-revealing amfAR Gala gown and why she considers her friends to be her style icons.
She loves leather.
“I’m always a California girl and not even a leather jacket can cover it up, but I do wear more leather now. I push myself a little bit more with fashion and I try and put things in an outfit that I wouldn’t normally, because sometimes the best things are the things that surprise people. I think once you get more comfortable with style it’s easier to work with it.”
She looks to fellow young stars for red-carpet style inspiration.
“It’s funny, I think I have style icons that I love seeing them wear their outfits, but I don’t necessarily think I would be able to pull them off. I think Zendaya has the most incredible style — she’s amazing, same with Rihanna. I think that they’re amazing, but I wouldn’t necessarily wear the same outfit just because I think everyone has a certain presence that they can make an outfit work.”
When she was younger, she used to wear her mom’s (Yolanda Foster, of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills) clothes — even to prom!
“In high school, I used to go in [my mom’s] closet and steal things. Like, I never bought a prom dress (and I went to prom all four years of high school), and I always wore my mom’s dresses, or shoes for that matter (we’re the same size).”
But that doesn’t mean she’s OK with her sister, Bella, raiding her wardrobe.
“I’d say I’m generous with certain things, but it’s funny because Bella and I have such different styles. Like, if she’s going to steal a cropped black tank top, we’re going to style it completely different and that’s what’s really cool.”
As for that plunging cutout Tom Ford gown she wore to the Cannes amfAR Gala, it didn’t require double-sided tape.
“It’s funny because people were like, ‘Aren’t you so uncomfortable keeping it all together and into place?,’ but it wasn’t tape — it was a mesh panel — so I didn’t really have to worry about it. I thought that was brilliant on his [Ford’s] part.”
