Yes, Paris Fashion Week ended a couple weeks ago, but fashion weeks are still going on throughout the globe.

Today, Ghana Fashion and Design Week begins in the capital of Accra. During the three day event, over a dozen designers will present fresh collections on an international scale.

“GFDW’s mission is to help make a difference, and change the perception of fashion as entertainment to what is suppose to be –a commercial industry,” a representative for Ghana Fashion & Design Week told StyleBlazer. “This means a lot of work and structures need to be in place from the grass roots to foster change for sustainable industry growth. This has to start right from the institutions and build on into the industry locally and globally.”

In an industry often dictated by Caucasians –hence the four biggest shows being in the U.S. and Europe– it’s refreshing to know other countries are highlighting their talent and reclaiming their place in the culture. Ghana specifically is known for its master tailoring and vibrant color palette, often associated with Dutch Ankara prints. But their fashion week reveals that they’re so much more.

On the next pages find out why you should keep an eye out for Ghana Fashion and Design Week.
