‘I Woke Up Like This’ Means Something Very Different for Julianne Moore

When celebs post barefaced selfies with the cribbed-from-Beyoncé caption “I woke up like this,” there’s an element of humblebragging involved. When Julianne Moore does it, it’s because she’s engaging in some serious #realtalk about her pre-glam-squad hair.

While appearing on Ellen DeGeneres’s talk show, Moore explained that her glossy, perfectly bent waves are the result of someone else’s skilled hands — and then DeGeneres pulled up a photo of Moore’s “summer hair” to illustrate the alternative. (It appears at 0:39 in the video below, but we’ll spoil it for you: It’s coarse, frizzy and pretty fabulous.)

“My hair is wavy, I like to say, but really, it’s pretty frizzy,” she explained. “In the summertime, I just let it go, and let it be, and I try not to go anywhere because I can’t control my hair.”

DeGeneres was skeptical, and so have other people been. “Somebody said to me, ‘You did that to your hair,’ and I said, ‘Oh no, I woke up that way,’” she said. “It’s my summer hair!”

Good hair, Moore says, comes with the seasons and a little extra help: “You have to wait for the fall to come, and get someone to blow it out for you,” she said. DeGeneres, for her part, remains unconvinced: “I think you’re talented, but I don’t think you know how to comb your hair.”
