Indian Models Making Waves In Fashion

When one thinks of India, connotations of Bollywood, color and vibrant fashion spring to mind.

However, look a little closer and you will see that under the surface of this bright and culture-heavy country, lies an extremely patriarchal society; one that is deeply rooted in traditions and customs. Women are still seen as homemakers while the men go out to work, and if there are women who work, then it usually only a handful of jobs.

The fashion industry is one of dreams for the average village girl, especially the life of a model; just ask Bhumika Arora and Pooja Mor, the Indian models who emerged in 2015 with a bang, by walking some of the hottest catwalks known to man.

These two beauties are among a small minority of Indian models making waves in the industry; when Burberry casted Neelam Gill, as the first Indian model of the brand’s campaign, people started to watch closely. Another model, who at a young age is making a name for herself, is Kelly Gale, the part Indian 20-year-old who regularly walks for Victoria’s Secret.

It takes great bravery to leave a judgemental society behind, and head West to break the norm and fulfil your dreams. For Bhumika, dreaming while growing up in a conservative town called Karnal in North India was what she initially thought life would be, until she went away to college and started working with a small cafe magazine, which published pictures of her, and that was the start of the rest of her life.

Pooja’s upbringing was slightly different in the sense that she won the blessings of her parents before heading into the fashion industry, a very rare thing to happen in a country that is only just accepting females going to college.

The fashion industry, which is constantly criticized for have a lack of diversity seems to be expanding the reigns a little to let in fresh new talent. Talent that makes for a more equal and vibrant world, and we definitely hope it gets brighter and brighter as the season’s go on.
