The next couple of months will be a very trying period for Michael Sam.  Not only will he have to overcome any and all hatred from anti-gay supporters, but he will also have to work on making his own father comfortable with his sexual orientation.

Ever since Sam came out of the closet to his Missouri teammates, he has been shown a great amount of support from them.  When he recently announced to the world that he is gay, random fans have come forward to offer motivational words to the soon-to-be NFL rookie.  Many have praised him for his fearlessness, choosing to live his life as he pleases and as happily as possible.  His father on the other hand, isn’t all too fond of the news that his son is attracted to other men.

The New York Times caught up with Sam’s father, Michael Sam Sr., on Sunday, February 10th, and allowed him to speak honestly about his reaction to the news.  Michael Sam Sr. found out after receiving a text from his son last Tuesday, February 4th, that read, “Dad, I’m gay.”

The news apparently made him sick, for he received the news while enjoying a meal at a Denny’s restaurant, but felt compelled to vacate the premises after he read the news.

“I couldn’t eat no more, so I went to Applebee’s to have drinks,” he told the Times.  I don’t want my grandkids raised in that kind of environment.”

Sam Sr. went on to state that Hall of Famer, Deacon Jones, of the Rams, “is turning over in his grave,” and that “as a black man, we have so many hurdles to cross.  This is just one he has to cross.”  Hopefully Michael Sam Sr. can come to terms with his son’s sexual orientation without letting it cause a rift in their relationship.
