One of the many benefits of spring is the ability to show off an entire outfit, free of heavy outerwear. With this free-ness comes mixed prints, a trend that is for the advanced dresser.

For some of you who have been wearing the look all winter, this will remind you of what you’re doing correctly. For those of you who haven’t attempted the trend since last summer, this will serve as a refresher.

Keep these couple tips in mind:
1. When you have free time on the weekends, play dress up with a full mirror. Explore the combinations in your closet ahead of time, to avoid clashing prints.
2. Remember mixing prints doesn’t always have to be eclectic. Yes, Ankara and ’70s flare are cool, but a conservative girl can rock the look with fun patterns like polka dots and strips.
3. Stray away from two similar geometric shapes. Unless you’re wearing a tailored look– like Solange in Miu Miu here– keep your print shapes completely different.
4. Make your accessories solid colors.
5. Choose same fabrics and color families to avoid looking all over the place.

Celebrities have already begun to wear the trend this year, pairing separates or wearing dresses with mixed prints.
