While natural curls can be equally sexy and edgy, they often require more care compared to other hair types. Since chemical processing and heat damage can sometimes trash your tresses, curly hair blunders go beyond the typical blow drying and coloring.

Aside from using ill suited products, most mistakes are the ones you’re probably not even aware of making.

So to properly save your curls from being a frazzled and tangled mess, here’s how to fix those snafus fast, with advice from three industry experts.

Heat Styling Blunders

“Being that curls are extremely delicate, most people don’t realize that heat styling tools can contribute to long standing damage, leaving curls extremely brittle and and dehydrated,” says Tippi Shorter, Aveda Global Artistic Director for Textured Hair.

“It’s definitely possible for heat styling to permanently straighten curls, if the iron or dryer is too hot, and left on any areas too long,” she says.

Although natural hair drying methods are recommended, chances are you’re going to have to use your blow dryer more often once the cooler temperatures roll right in. To adopt a proper fall-ready drying strategy that won’t scorch your hair, start by turning down the heat when styling your hair.

“When the hair is exposed to high heat, your hair gets dry and frizzes up,” says Celebrity Hairstylist and Hair Thinning Expert Angelo David Pisacreta of Angelo David Salon, NYC.

“Whenever heat styling, be sure to use the lowest heat setting possible to achieve the best result. Even if you want to flat iron curly hair, always use a lower heat setting, and make several passes with the iron,” he says.
