Those already familiar with Lisa Eldridge know the incredibly detailed aesthetic of her makeup tutorials. They’re clean, easy to follow and always on the cusp of what’s “happening” in the beauty world. This month marks the highly anticipated release of the MUA’s first book, Face Paint: The History Of Makeup and this amazing seven minute video that covers looks over a span of 5,000 years.

From the ancient Egyptians to the makeup-free Victorians, Eldridge’s soothing British accent provides commentary on each era and the attitudes toward beauty products during that respective time. Believe it or not, there was a time when “unibrows” were chic and vamp lipstick was frowned upon. The overlying theme of the clip is that ultimately, there’s no “wrong” makeup look since it’s a form of self expression.

“You might want to wear a nude lip, or a vibrant pink lip, purple eyeshadow, or no makeup at all!,” Eldridge concludes.
