Just when we thought things couldn’t get any weirder–selfies leading to more plastic surgery, a real-life Barbie Girl, and the Kim and Kanye Vogue cover were good enough for a while–we hear news like this: the New York Times reports that foot surgery is on the rise so women can better fit into designer heels.

We didn’t think there were many more ways we could get surprised by the lengths people go to in order to feel beautiful, but foot surgery seems to come from a place we haven’t yet found within ourselves. No shade though, to each her own. And the ladies are loving it.

Accoring to one NYC doctor, patients have been coming to him with high heel woes for almost 15 years. It’s a simple fact that not all feet fit well into the soles of a Manolo Blahnik pump or a Christian Louboutin mule, especially if that foot has bunions or another painful condition.

Bunion surgery seems pretty standard compared to what else is going down–toe shortening/lengthening, and fat-pad augmentation, are two examples.

On first consideration, foot surgery can seem like a vain, first-world problem preventing rich women from wearing sandals in St. Barth’s–and it totally is–but there’s something to be said for a woman knowing what will make her feel better and more confident and making the right moves to get there. Isn’t that what we’re all trying to do through our fashion statements?

StyleBlazers, would you ever get plastic surgery on your foot to better fit into designer shoes?
