Amandla Stenberg’s Latest Project Empowers Girls Of Color

The socially aware 16-year-old has been outspoken about cultural appropriation and the media’s portrayal of women of color. Her latest project continues her mission to empower young girls of color by giving them a voice.

The “Hunger Games” star is now the author of a comic book titled “Niobe: She Is Life” and in a genre like comics with very few protagonists of color, it is exactly what is needed. “Niobe” follows a half-elf, half-human warrior as she embarks on a journey of self-discovery, finding her strengths and the power inside herself along the way. Much like Stenberg.

“I was drawn to give voice to Niobe and co-write her story because her journey is my journey. I connect to her mixed racial background and quest to discover her innate powers and strengths, to learn who she truly is,” Stenberg said in a statement. “She is on a path to a destiny that will test her faith and her will, something we can all relate to. But there’s never been a character quite like her– one who shatters the traditional ideal of what a hero is. We need more badass girls!”

Stranger Comics, who is dedicated to creating projects targerting underrepresented audiences, is releasing the book written by the young starlet, and has worked with others such as Halle Berry in the past.

The comic is expected to be released November 4.
