J.R. Smith Suspended 5 Games for Positive Marijuana Test (@therealjrsmith)

Knicks guard and reigning Sixth Man of the Year, J.R. Smith, has officially been suspended five games by the NBA for violating the substance abuse policy. According to Yahoo Sports, J.R. tested positive for marijuana.

Despite the violation, Smith isn’t really allowed to defend himself, and might not want to anyways.

“There is a collectively-bargained process in place, established by the NBA and the Players Association, and until that process has played itself out, it would be inappropriate for the NBPA or J.R. to make further statements about the matter,” said Ron Klempner, the NBPA’s executive director. “We all look forward to a resolution in due course.”

Smith signed on for 3 more years with the Knicks for $18 million, but he likely won’t touch the court for a while. On top of his suspension, Smith is battling knee issues and had surgery done this offseason.
