Lolita Fashion For Beginners: Everything To Know & Shop

Lolita fashion is not for those who are scared of taking sartorial risks.

The Japanese street style subculture was inspired by Victorian period, and is all about living and dressing as classically and visually “beautiful” as possible. The style has nothing to do with the famous novel by the same novel penned by Vladimir Nabokov, and everything to do with being the ultimate in femininity. Lolitas sometimes embody a more innocent and childlike version of style, but with a sense of elegance.

For those that want to dabble in Lolita fashion, but not look completely out of place there are a few rules to follow. According to LolitaFashion.org, a Lolita outfit has six key elements: headwear, blouse, bell-shaped skirt, undergarments, knee-length socks and footwear.

However, there is a Lolita style for every type of girl. There are goth Lolitas, casual Lolitas, punk Lolita and sweet Lolita, among others.

While the complete look may seem like a costume, there are ways to incorporate Lolita-esque pieces into your every day wardrobe. From lace socks to floral skirts, you can ease into the Lolita look with just a few additions to your outfit.
