Mindy Kaling’s fashion obsession is legendary, both on-screen and off (as anyone who follows her Instagram or watches The Mindy Project can tell you, but there is one place you’re not likely to see her in a colorful crop top set or studded red leather booties: the writer’s room on set.

“At a certain point, there’s only one way to dress as a comedy writer,” she tells Yahoo! Style. “You end up dressing like a hot L.A. guy: boyfriend jeans, Stan Smiths, and a grey t-shirt.”
Outside of the writer’s room, though, Kaling has picked up a ton of tricks from her onscreen alter ego, namely that looking great is all in the details. “I had tweed separates from Reiss. I replaced the hardware on it and people thought it was a Chanel skirt suit, which I could never afford,” she says. “And I do well! I don’t know who can afford Chanel.”

She’s also learned the value of tailoring clothes to fit her body well from the show’s costume designer, Salvador Perez, but she’s really not into obsessing about her weight these days (emoji preach hands, Mindy). “When people talk about the way I look, it obviously bothers me. But the way it bothers other woman that I know is just so astonishing to me,” she says. “They’ve always managed to find me clothes at photo shoots. They’re never like, ‘We can’t dress this creature!’”

In addition to the show’s return to Hulu this fall, Kaling’s second book is due this fall (look for some seriously juicy Hollywood dirt this time around) and she’s working on a project with nebulous ex B.J. Novak. She swears isn’t going to be weird at all, especially because she’s dating a lot, just not broke L.A. comedians. “Someone who has a lot of rants but not a lot of money: That’s somebody I’m not interested in dating again. I’m surprised, sometimes even a nice strong crush will sustain me for a long time.”
Best of all? There might be little Mindys in the not-too-distant future. “I’m not cavalier about who I would have a kid with,” she says about considering babies with or without a partner. “But the thing I ask every parent that I really admire, the one comment they all have is that they wish they had kids earlier.” We’ll start bedazzling the onesies now.
