A turtleneck is an often overlooked wardrobe essential, possibly even intentionally bypassed.
Childhood memories of a doting mother insisting I wear a snug thick cotton turtleneck under just about everything once temperatures started to drop are immediately conjured up in my mind. But turns out Mom might have been on to something! Turtlenecks are the latest wardrobe essential for fall.
The turtleneck seems to be the logical progression of 70’s style that was a huge hit this summer. Turtlenecks pair perfectly with a retro-inspired button front denim skirt or suede jacket for a look reminiscent of a young Gloria Steinem and adept for transitioning between seasons.
Yet not all turtlenecks need to be old school. Designers like Dries Van Noten and Phillip Lim showed cool new turtlenecks for fall that stand out on their own while brands like Marni and Michael Kors included simpler, yet updated styles perfect for layering under structured dress, comfy cardigans and everything else – just like Mom used to do!
