The showcase from the sister/brother duo behind Nicholas K, Nicholas and Christoper Kunz, always seems like a refreshingly original departure from the typical runway procedure of NYFW. Designers make it their mission to exhibit a new direction from their design house every season, however, Nicholas K always seems to be on another plane of thought; and for the most part, removed trends that are already beginning to emerge amidst the various collections on the catwalk.
Case in point: you are likely to never see florals or frills on the Nicholas K runway… at least not yet.
This consistency in originality and constancy to loyalty to the brand’s signature aesthetic motifs, has yet to create an NYFW presentation that doesn’t fall short of complete astonishment.
This season, the garments for SS16 were injected with the energy, movement, and dynamism that gives the collection its name, “Terminal Velocity.” The designers justified the title “because it’s really high-energy, really adrenaline-packed,” and this was true in both name and construction. The collection’s inspiration was found in BASE jumpers so intensity was positively guaranteed.
Although it’s clear the designers prefer to gravitate towards heaviness, complexity, and overwrought layering in their looks- elements that would lend themselves to the fall season- there was a definitive flavor of spring in “Terminal Velocity.” This distinctive attitude was visible in the attention toward developing pieces geared for the Spring/Summer version of the Nicholas K. customer. Consideration for Spring/Summer was evidenced in the color palette of whites, beige, terra cotta, and even pops of marigold, burnt orange, and sky blue- slightly unusual tones for the label. When this palette combines with flowing, lightweight fabrics and avant-garde styling, the end result is dynamite.
