Rappers Admit to Buying Twitter Followers to Boost Popularity (@Fyrare @IAMPHILLYCHASE)

Recently, the Wall Street Journal has profiled the phenomenon around the true popularity of many Twitter accounts, particularly those run by relatively unknown individuals, which centered on rapper Fyrare. Fyrare admits that he uses the services of Jim Vidmar, who runs a business in which he programs fake Twitter accounts to follow a client’s account.

Fyrare, real name Dave Murrell says he also buys Twitter ads, “but you’ll get more with Jim.”

“If you’re not padding your numbers, you’re not doing it right,” said Fyrare. “It’s part of the game.”

A Twitter spokesperson addressed the issue of fake accounts in the article. “We have a variety of automated and manual controls in place to detect, flag, and suspend accounts created solely for spam purposes.”

Vidmar explained that his accounts help make his clients trending topics, which has also helped another rapper, Philly Chase Chase, a rapper from Philadelphia, said that hiring Vidmar is “the best decision I ever made,” adding that being a trending topic so much has allowed him to attract attention from local newspapers, and helped him secure gigs and fans.
