Well, it’s a little more complicated than that, but researchers at Indiana University think they found the formula for what makes a top model. According to Racked, the scientists looked at 400 models from the Fashion Model Directory, and looked at everything from their eye and hair color, measurements, modeling agency and the number of runways they walked. They then analyzed how the models’ Instagram account for factors such as number of followers, and how often they post, to predict which models would come out on top next season.
“We chose the fashion industry for this research because it represents a strong ‘winner-take-all’ mentality,” computer scientist Emilio Ferrara said in a press release. “This aspect of survival of the fittest, plus the large amount of statistical data on professional models, makes it a perfect subject for advancing research on ‘the science of success.’”
They narrowed down the group to fifteen models, and of those, six had the predicted “break out” moment, with Sofia Tesmenitskaya, Arina Levchenko, Renata Scheffer, Sasha Antonowskaia, Melanie Culley, and Phillipa Hemphrey ranked as the six most popular new models of the Fall/Winter 2015 season due to the number of runways they walked.
So what is the magic top model formula?
Success in the modeling world is tied to the agency you are signed to, frequently posting on Instagram and getting a high number of likes and comments, and also being tall (an inch over the average to be exact).
No offense, but that seems pretty obvious to us. We guess the scientists at IU have not been watching the last 20 seasons of “America’s Next Top Model.”
