Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood Announces Junun LP, Shares Paul Thomas Anderson-Directed Video for "Roked"

Earlier this year, Radiohead‘s Jonny Greenwood revealed he was working on a new album in India with Israeli composer Shye Ben Tzur. Now, it has a title and release date. Junun, which also features Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich and Indian qawwali group the Rajasthan Express, is due November 13 via Nonesuch. As previously reported, it’s accompanied by a documentary of the same name, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood). Below, watch a clip from the film featuring a full track, “Roked”.

Speaking last year to the Evening Standard about the project, Greenwood said:

When I was in the Negev desert in southern Israel a couple of years ago, I heard a band playing a song using an Arabic violin called a rehab. It was a strange mix of Arabic and traditional Indian music, one that I’d never come across before. The best song, I found out, was written by Shye Ben Tzur, an Israeli musician who had been living in India until this year. I set out to discover more about him … I’m always a little wary of rock bands half-heartedly dabbling in world music—itself a slightly greasy term—but there are exceptions. Damon Albarn is one: his work with musicians in Mali is something he’s clearly fully committed to. And I think Shye Ben Tzur is another.

Junun is streaming for 30 days on Mubi, starting today.

Greenwood previously wrote the scores for Anderson’s Inherent Vice, The Master, and There Will Be Blood.
