Harry Belafonte spent more than seven decades proving that an artist’s voice could reach far beyond the stage. Music, film, and activism became interconnected pieces of a life dedicated to challenging injustice—and in his final years, Belafonte was already thinking about who would carry that responsibility forward.
Director Susanne Rostock captures that transition in Following Harry, an intimate documentary chronicling the final twelve years of Belafonte’s life. Following an award-winning festival run, Blue Harbor Entertainment has acquired the film for a nationwide U.S. VOD release on October 13, bringing Belafonte’s conversations about art, power, resistance, and responsibility to audiences across the country.
Leaving Crumbs For The Next Generation
Rather than approaching Belafonte’s life as a traditional retrospective, Following Harry moves alongside him through some of the defining social movements of his later years. From the aftermath of Trayvon Martin‘s death and the protests in Ferguson to the Women’s March, the documentary captures both his public activism and quieter conversations at home as he works alongside a new generation of artists and organizers.
That next generation appears throughout the film, with Aja Monet, Angela Davis, Aloe Blacc, Carmen Perez, Chuck D, Gina Belafonte, Jamie Foxx, Jesse Williams, Kerry Kennedy, Phillip Agnew, Rosario Dawson, Talib Kweli, and others joining the story. Belafonte described his role not as providing every answer, but leaving behind what he had learned for others to examine, use, or improve upon:
Each generation must be responsible for itself. All I can do is leave behind the crumbs of my experience. I have a trail that you can follow, if you find value in it, pick it up and if you don’t, bring something better.
Those “crumbs” give the documentary its emotional center. Belafonte wasn’t asking another generation to recreate his activism; he was challenging them to learn from it, question it, and ultimately build something capable of responding to their own moment.
Twelve Years Behind The Movement
Rostock, who previously directed the Belafonte documentary Sing Your Song, spent more than twelve years documenting that process. Her camera gained access not only to a legendary performer and activist, but to a man confronting the limits of time while trying to transfer decades of experience before it was too late. Reflecting on the urgency that began that journey and ultimately shaped ‘Following Harry,’ Susanne Rostock shared:

A Legacy Still In Motion
The documentary arrives on VOD after selections at the Tribeca Film Festival, Santa Barbara International Film Festival, and Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival, along with honors from the Sidewalk Film Festival, BronzeLens, and Cleveland International Film Festival.
