A card table becomes a mirror when every opponent has your face. Ebony Riley makes confrontation within the center of Sick Of Me. This time she’s turning self-worth into a contest with the versions of herself she is trying to outgrow. Siwoo’s video moves from streetlights reflected on wet pavement into a room of cards, poker chips and luminous color. The setting makes an internal argument visible without needing a separate antagonist. As the opening song on Beautiful Traged, its fearless vocal and lyrical stance establishes the album’s concern with standing up for yourself while recognizing your own role in the struggle. The final image of Riley sitting alone brings that tension back to its source. She explains the album as:
I had to be more intentional about speaking life into myself.
Intention runs through “Beautiful Tragedy” with the 13-track debut dedicated to her late mother. Executive producer Larrance “Rance” Dopson worked alongside Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, James Fauntleroy, Tommy “TBHits” Brown and Harmony Samuels on a record drawing classic R&B influences into the present. Riley’s range, from airy highs to a darker lower register, gives her personal material several expressive shades. “Sick Of Me” follows the Jerkins-produced Honest video and the Only You chapter. Where the new visual turns its gaze inward, the album’s dedication places “Sick Of Me” self-examination within a larger story of loss and renewal.
