Paul Marquez, 22, of Staten Island was jealous that his girlfriend was paying her two-month-old daughter a lot of attention, so he put an ad up on Craigslist asking $100 for the baby. At least one person made an offer to buy the child before Marquez was arrested.
He was charged with authority to place or board out children, aggravated harassment, and endangering the welfare of a child, and is being held on a $1,000 bond. When asked for his motive, Marquez said he “did all this to get back at Katie,” referring to his 19-year-old girlfriend. He also allegedly added, “The reason I decided to put this post was because I got bored and wanted to get a little laugh and a little kick out of it, but nothing serious.”
He also admitted to using the child’s photo with his girlfriend’s number on the ad, which he placed in the “Baby + Kid section” of the website.
